Proposal FAQs

When is the open call for proposals due?

May 31, 2025

When can applicants expect to hear back?

Applicants can expect to hear back by June 15, 2025.

How long are exhibits installed for?

Each exhibit is installed for 6 - 8 weeks.

What kinds of art are accepted? Are there limitations to the materials that can be used?

We welcome art across disciplines and encourage experimentation in materials, concept, and execution. Installations, sculpture, and other interventions are welcome!

Projects are installed outdoors and need to be visible from the sidewalk and street. Since artworks are outdoors 24/7 during their 6-8 week installation, the materials used need to be durable enough to withstand a wide variety of weather conditions. Projects should be completely weatherproof and need to be secured so that they do not fall over, including in windy conditions.

Works of art in a variety of materials are accepted. Please note, we’re not equipped to work with projects that require electricity or have combustible components at this time. If you have any questions about what media is appropriate, please Contact Us.

Do artists receive a stipend?

At this time artists do not receive a stipend.

Fits & Starts is a volunteer-led DIY project. We have secured a fiscal sponsor to accept tax-deductible contributions and we are seeking funding for future seasons.

What are the benefits to artists?

Artists receive an opportunity to share new work, experiment with materials, and engage with new audiences. Fits & Starts markets each artist’s exhibit, assists with install, and hosts the site for exhibition and events.

What are the dimensions of the installation space?

The total installation space is 12’ H x 36’ W. The length from the sidewalk to the garden is 12’. Projects are welcome to use a portion of the space or all of it. Click here to view a map.

Do proposals need to involve the community?

Proposals for exhibits at Fits & Starts can be community-based or social practice projects, but they do not need to be. We encourage experimentation in materials, concept, and execution. No matter the media, each exhibition has a reception and artists are invited to do an artist talk, panel or other engagement activity to foster connections with the public.

How do people hear about exhibitions at Fits & Starts Project Site?

There is signage on the Fits & Starts lawn that includes a QR code, a press release is sent out for each exhibition to local media, and neighbors receive invitations to receptions.

What does “mid-career” mean?

For the purposes of Fits & Starts, mid-career means that an artist has five or more years of professional artistic practice. Ebbs and flows to that practice are very welcome.
